The Hills Market Blog

It's Kind of a Big Deal.

Pulled pork sandwiches, Hills Own Famous Baked Beans, our classic coleslaw, plenty of brews and live music from our favorite Bluegrass Band, Death By Banjo, come together to create the best Labor Day party in Ohio. (Yeah, we went there; it's the best in the STATE.) You should clearly plan on coming. Click through for more information.

An Imported Value.

Jay Stiffler, our grocery buyer and resident expert on Italian fare, is thrilled about our new Di Sardegna pastas, imported directly from Sardinia. These pastas, made with 100% durum wheat and semolina flour, come in six shapes, including rigatoni, farfalle, spaghetti, bucatini and bavettine. These pastas are dense and don't break down in dishes. At $2.69 a package, they're a great deal, as well!

Columbus-made Carbonation.

We now carry several varieties of Kombu-tea, a small-batch, naturally carbonated drink made with organic green teas, made right here in Columbus. The fermentation process leaves Kombu-tea with beneficial bacteria and yeast, a natural aid for digestion. Look for it in our dairy aisle.

Summer Soup!

We've posted another summer soup recipe over here. Sweet corn, beets, cucumbers and Hills Own Famous Crab Cakes convene in one perfectly-balanced dish. (And no, we don't give away our crab cake recipe. A store has to have some secrets!)

Wine and Cheese, Please.

Photo: Eric Albrecht | DispatchOur wine and cheese dream team, Constance Begue and Kent Rand, share their expertise on pairing Ohio wines and cheeses in this article in the Columbus Dispatch. Want to experience their pairings (and Kent's fantastic hors d'oeuvres) firsthand? Click through to our list of upcoming Wine & Cheese Tastings. They sell out quickly, so be sure to make your reservations early.

A vintage treat: Wine and cheese - a simple summer dessert alternative

A View through the Cooking Class.

Want to see what a cooking class at The Hills Market is like? Here are a few images from last night's class with Norman Carmichael (the first of three) featuring light and interesting summer cooking with a focus on seafood.

This Week is Beer Float Week!

This pronouncement was made by the same Columbus food enthusiast who can list at least 48 reasons why Columbus, Ohio is the Ice Cream Capital of the World. We're not going to argue with him. Click through to read Jim Ellison's updates on all things local and ice cream, including awesome news about our friends from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and Snowville Creamery. (The best way, by the way, to celebrate Beer Float Week is to attend Beer Floats! Beer Floats! Beer Floats! tomorrow on the Veranda.)

Plentiful Harvest.

If you wandered into our kitchen right now, there's a 68% chance they're still talking about those peaches that Wayward Seed Farm sent us for our recipes and tonight's Harvest Happy Hour (5:30 to 7:30 p.m.) on The Veranda. As the growing season (for fruits and vegetables) shifts gears to go full-force, we change our pattern and offer not one, but two samples to satiate your appetite tonight. Can't come? No worries the recipes for the Cold Parsnip and Yellow Squash Soup with Curried Crème Fraîche and Peaches with Kirschwasser and Mint are online, so you can try these at home.
