Twice a year, we team up with North Market to put on a little ditty called Market to Market, a bike ride centered around local foods. A salmon (symbolic of our famous Salmon Roast) becomes our mascot and takes to the trail alongside Rudy the Rooster from North Market in pursuit of breakfast, trailside vendors and organizations, a scoop of Jeni's Ice Cream and, of course a ton of fun. One of our favorite signs of autumn is the arrival of potatoes in Wayward Seed Farm's CSA share. Luckily, though, tomatoes are still growing strong here in Ohio. Grecian Olive Oil From Ohio?
It's no secret that we love to support Ohio products. We try to mark each Ohio product in our store, so that you can easily support them, as well. Sometimes we come across items that aren't easy to label. If a peanut is grown in Virginia but is seasoned and distributed from Athens, Ohio, does it qualify as an Ohio product? (We say yes.) As Warren Taylor from Snowville Creamery (a no-question-about-it Ohio staple) points out, sometimes we have to "play God."
This is all to say that we have a new collection of Greece-grown olive oils on our shelves, and although they are clearly produced overseas, they do have a Franklin County connection. These (incredible) olive oils are on our shelves because two sisters in Dublin, Ohio worked to create a direct connection between these small batch producers and the good ol' 6-1-4. We're proud to carry these olive oils, and equally proud of the hundreds of entrepreneurs in our home state who work hard to make sure we eat well.
We Say Tomato.
Woody (our lovable produce director, who's been a fan of tomatoes since they were invented) has a slight spring to his step these days. We're pretty much overflowing with Ohio tomatoes in the produce department and the Chef's Case. (Jen's been buying heirlooms from one of our friends in the Worthington Hills; you can't get any more local than that!) We've got a recipe (or two) to help you enjoy this August bounty. Farmers' Market & Kids Food Day Wrap-up.
This past weekend was our Annual Farmers' Market and our first-ever Food is Fun: Kids Food Day at The Hills Market. Not only did we get to see some of our favorite vendors (and taste their wares) but we had a great time working alongside a few worthy organizations and individuals in Columbus: Local Matters, Slow Food Columbus, Edible Columbus and Rachel from Hounds in the Kitchen.
